Love, Courage, and Chiefs: Shelley & John’s Journey Together

In the heart of Chief’s country, amidst a sea of red and gold, a love story unfolded that would touch the heart of every person it reached. Shelley and John, two souls who found each other later in life, discovered a teenage-like love that blossomed swiftly and deeply. Their love was celebrated daily, from their first Valentine’s Day at Jimm’s Steakhouse & Pub to an anniversary that turned into a beautiful proposal.

Their connection is about the simple joys—binge-watching crime shows, cheering on The Kansas City Chiefs, and dreaming of a future together. But fate wrote a challenging chapter for them. John, a fighter with a spirit as fierce as the players he idolizes, is the longest-living LVAD patient. His battle with Congestive Heart Failure brought them to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis in December, where Shelley stood by him, taking the time off work.  She spent 6 weeks sleeping in the hospital recliner, her unwavering love the beacon guiding them through their darkest times.

With the future so unknown, The hospital staff arranged for them to get married there. Amid the beeps and whispers of the hospital, they exchanged vows, a testament to their unyielding bond in the face of uncertainty. After 6 weeks, They were finally able to return home. A “Just Married” sign painted upon their door, greeted them, a bittersweet reminder of the joys and sorrows interwoven in their life together.

It has been in my heart to make sure they were able to get some photos together. Sadly, John was quickly transitioned to hospice end-of-life care shortly after returning to Springfield. I had the honor of capturing their love in the comfort of their home, where Chief’s pride adorns every corner. In a space transformed by necessity, their living room has been replaced with a hospital bed. Shelley is still sleeping in a recliner- not wanting to leave his side. The newlyweds greeted me with smiles when I arrived, both proudly wearing their Patrick Mahomes jerseys. I know that this is not what they imagined for their wedding photos, but I know in my heart they will be cherished just as much. John struggled to be fully with us in the moment, but one thing was clear–their love for one another was still shining through more than ever.

Shelley, ever-present by John’s side, now faces the unimaginable task of saying goodbye far too soon. John’s heart failure continues to progress and they are not sure how much time he has left. Instead of being excited at changing her name and the typical joys of newlywed bliss-Shelley is put in the position of planning her new husband’s funeral. This is where you come in. John and Shelley’s journey is a testament to love’s power and resilience, but they need our support. They face mounting medical and living expenses, and without the safety net of life insurance, the road ahead is daunting. Let’s rally for them, Chiefs Kingdom, and all who believe in love’s triumph. Any contribution to their GoFundMe will ease Shelley’s burden and allow her to cherish the time they have left without the shadow of financial worry. If it moves you, please reach out with a helping hand. Let’s give back to John and Shelley the same joy and strength they’ve shared with us.

John + Dustin | Greenhouse Two Rivers Wedding, Highlandville MO

I have been counting down the days until Dustin’s & John’s wedding day for what seems like forever. These two exude such authentic warmth and kindness. They are the kind of people you cannot help but want to make your best friends. Needless to say, I was thrilled to be the one chosen to capture every moment.

The morning was buzzing with excitement despite the cloudy winter sky that draped over Greenhouse Two Rivers. Their energy was infectious as they gathered with their wedding party, a crew of vivacious souls that mirrored their kindness and zest for life. Laughter filled the air, setting the tone for a day brimming with joy.

The happy couple wanted to be surrounded by their favorite people, so they began the day with the entire wedding party squeezed into one of the suites. John and Dustin then took turns in the groom’s suite, ensuring the magic of the first look remained intact. When that moment finally arrived, they turned and their eyes met, filled with emotion. It was simply pure love, drawing cheers and happy tears from their devoted friends standing witness.

This group was ready to celebrate. After wedding party portraits, it was time to hide away as their guests began to arrive. They may have hidden, but they weren’t exactly quiet. You could hear “Get Low” blasting from the other side of the building as they excitedly prepared for the ceremony.

Amy Wallace officiated a ceremony that was a testament to the journey of John and Dustin’s love story. Tears flowed freely, including my own, uniting hearts in celebration of this beautiful love story.

After the ceremony, John & Dustin hugged their guests before taking some portraits with their family. The rain began a slight drizzle just as we were finishing a few last portraits of the lovebirds. We grabbed a few umbrellas and carried on. Nothing could dull the bliss of this spectacular day.

Soon it was TIME TO PARTY!!! This is what they’d been waiting for. They were ready to combine their love of music and dancing into an unforgettable party. The guests signed their well-wishes on the Taylor Swift record that was serving as a guestbook and then waited with anticipation to welcome the newlyweds. The day culminated in a grand entrance that set the dance floor ablaze. Lady Marmalade pulsed through the air as the wedding party sashayed into the reception, igniting a night that was a culmination of love, laughter, and dance. A delicious dinner by Simply Delicious was followed by love-filled speeches. The celebration unfurled the dance floor a whirlwind of twirls and laughter. The joy was contagious as the warmth of the party created a haze of steam across the glass walls.

As the Winter night continued to fall, a bittersweet moment arrived when farewells became inevitable. But not before the couple was sent off under a shower of cheers, the cold sparks lighting their path as they embarked on the journey of marriage. This day will forever be etched in my heart. Dustin and John, Thank you for choosing to share your perfect day with us. I am forever grateful to have met you both. I am so excited to watch you continue to dance into the next chapter of your love story.

      Lots of Love,
      Jessica

Ben + Katie’s Wedding Day at Finley River Farms, Ozark MO

In the Fall landscape of Ozark, Missouri, under the gentle rhythm of raindrops, the next chapter of Ben & Katie’s love story was being woven. In the warmth of a Farmhouse just outside of Ozark, Missouri, with their family and their two delightful children, they prepared for a day that promised a harmony of joy, remembrance, and resilience. As the sky wept, the farmhouse pulsed with anticipation, profound emotions, and a heartwarming charm. Under the gray Missouri sky, the rain carried with it a sign of good luck. After finishing getting dressed, Katie tucked a charm in her pocket which included a memento in memory of her recently passed father, encapsulating cherished memories and unspoken emotions.

Katie & Ben’s first look was a beautiful moment. Sheltered under the farmhouse porch, away from the soft drizzle, Ben’s eyes absolutely lit up when he saw Katie. It was a testament of their love, as comforting and consistent as the rhythm of the rain. The spark in his eyes held a promise of unwavering commitment and the anticipation of their journey ahead.

The remainder of the day unfolded at the tranquil Finley River Farms. The ceremony was held in a charming wooden, creekside chapel. In a tender moment that tugged at every heartstring, their sweet young son, Owen, walked his mother down the aisle, each small step echoing in the chapel and in the hearts of the onlookers. The words “I do” echoed through the chapel, resonating with love and commitment. The chair where Katie’s father should have sat held his photograph, a silent tribute to his enduring presence in their lives.

The reception at The Workshop was a celebration of love, unity, and cherished memories. Under the glow of candlelight, stories were shared, and laughter echoed. Adding to the intimate atmosphere, everyone ate family-style at two long tables, fostering a sense of unity and family bond, enhancing the warmth and intimacy of the occasion. Owen, their young son, captivated the crowd during speeches, letting his parents know just how much he loved them. His words brought smiles, laughter, and a few more tears to the already emotional day. Yet, the dance between Katie and her mother, a dance that would’ve been with her father, held everyone in a silent, emotional embrace.

Under the rain-soaked Missouri night, Katie and Ben celebrated a love that was joyous, tender, and beautifully real. Their wedding day, which began with rain and cherished memories, ended with a celebration that was a testament to their love story. This intimate wedding was more than just a union of two hearts; it was a poignant reminder of love’s strength and family bonds.

Katie & Ben, I was absolutely honored to share this perfect day with you and your favorite people. I am wishing you so much love as you continue this next chapter of your story together.

        Lots of Love,
        Jessica
